| POINT OF BEGINNING |
|
|
| The Gila and Salt rivers
join just east of the Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale,
Arizona. Years ago the Bureau of Land Management arbitrarily selected a
spot within the confluence of these two broad and often dry rivers as
the unique point from which all property in the State of Arizona is
oriented when legally described. It is atop an inconspicuous hill with
excellent views in all directions. Through the years various surveyors
have climbed the hill and driven nails into the ground to “exactly”
mark this imaginary point. Would you be surprised to learn that
surveyors disagree (just a little bit) on its exact location? We
selected the most prominent marker for our group photo. It is from this
point that Baseline Road and 115th Avenue were laid out. Baseline Road
is the east-west primary “Baseline” for the state and 115th Avenue is
its north-south “Principle Meridian.”
